Zaza’s Coffee House: Halal Haggis, neeps and tatties.

Zaza’s is a fully halal Scottish cafe with some awesome Scottish food and a show-stopping view. When in Scotland you have to try Haggis right? Haggis is the national dish of Scotland. It is composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep (or other animal), minced and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep’s stomach and boiled. I know I know. You’re all thinking – I want this NOW!

The Scottish Breakfast

Zaza’s, run by Turks, was the only place we found that offers halal haggis in its traditional form. I wanted to try the Scottish breakfast (like English but plus potato scones and haggis), but they don’t do all day breakfasts. So, get there before midday if you want to try that. I then opted for the next thing I also wanted to try – Haggis Neeps and Tatties. This is the most traditional way to have haggis. With neeps (swede) and tatties (potato). Unfortunately, they were out of neeps. Shame. So, I just had haggis and tatties (usually comes in mash form, but they serve it here as chips). Nonetheless, I enjoyed my meal. The haggis was absolutely delicious, spiced well enough to eradicate any potential odor. Texture-wise it was bitty and taste-wise you couldn’t even tell it was offal! They do it good here. We tried haggis a number of different ways, so do look out for our future posts on that. This way right here at Zaza’s was delicious!

And how’s that for a view from the cafe? You can admire the Edinburgh castle as you enjoy a nice meal and drink here at this place. It’s located near the Edinburgh castle end of the royal mile (just off it). Right next to Mary’s Milk Bar.

[…] A halal full Scottish breakfast was extremely hard to find. And as mentioned before, due to the widespread vegan food scene, there was no real need for a halal breakfast spot (seriously, the vegan scene is sooo good). However, of course I am a meat lover and I need my dose eventually. So, this gem right here was a find that I was extremely proud of. Located right near the Edinburgh castle, it is the perfect stop before you start your Edinburgh castle or Royal Mile exploring day. Try and grab the window seat that has a showstopping view of the Edinburgh castle too. Read our dedicated post on this cafe here. […]
