Kaya Toast

One of our favourite breakfasts is Kaya toast, a Singaporean breakfast classic (which is also popular in Malaysia). It is made up of two slices of toast with a thick knob of butter and kaya (coconut jam), typically served alongside slightly milky coffee and soft-boiled eggs.

How to consume it

The slab of butter is thickkkkk; so much so that it looks like a butter sandwich! It’s like thick slices of cheese. The kaya jam which is spread on the toast is like cocaine (meaning it is super addictive). I can’t believe I didn’t bring any back (they sell it in jars)! The best way to have this dish is: pour a bit of soy sauce and sprinkle a dash of white pepper over the eggs, mix it. Then dip your toast into the eggs and if you really want to be authentic, dip it into the coffee (yes, you read that right). If you don’t want to spoil your coffee, you can just take a spoon of the coffee and pour it over your bite. This bite right here that I described is going to be one of the best bites you ever take!

Yakun Kaya

I mentioned a few weeks ago about the fact that if a dish is epic, it makes you forget all your sorrows of life for that moment. Well the first time we had this in Singapore in the famous joint: Yakun Kaya – we were blown away! Game changer! We instantly thought; the best breakfast ever! But honestly, I’d like to add another condition for epicness- that you can have it on numerous occasions without it feeling boring/sickly. We loved it so much we had to have it the next day for breakfast too and unfortunately the second time round it just tasted sickly (because of the butter). So, it’s a dish which is enjoyable every now and then I guess. It’s the slab of cholesterol, I mean butter – I can’t handle it.Nevertheless, Yakun Kaya in Singapore is a must visit and this breakfast dish is a must try! You’ll fall in love with the kaya!
