Bintang: Halal Filipino Brunch in London
Bintang serves must try traditional halal filipino and pan asian dishes including authentic Filipino breakfast in Kentish Town London.
Filipino breakfast at Bintang, London

Silog is a category of Filipino breakfast dishes that contain garlic fried rice, fried egg and some form of meat/or meat alternative. Almost like the Filipino full English. One of the most popular forms of Silog is the Tapislog. This is garlic fried rice, fried egg and beef steak (or jerky).

Bintang on Kentish Town Road serve up the Tapislog as well as other Silogs. They are an established family run fully Halal Filipino restaurant that have been serving up delicious pan-asian food to the people of Camden for over 30 years! They serve these Filipino breakfast classics on weekends (after 12 thus making it brunch technically). This is the same road where Mamasons are located (their neighbours!) – read the dedicated post here – so the perfect spot to pick up something sweet after. Also, a few doors down is a Filipino bakery, Panadera – read the dedicated post here – make sure you get the pandan frappe!

How was the Tapislog?

It was everything you want in a breakfast or brunch dish. The perfect way to start the morning. Hearty, packed full of flavour and will keep you full for the day. The beef steak slices were thin and cooked to perfection making it easy to cut, the garlic fried rice had a prominent garlic taste (who doesn’t love that?) and the fried egg works perfectly to bring all of the components together. Oh and there’s tomatoes there too if you’re interested…

May seem a little overwhelming for breakfast, but trust me it works. We got one to share thinking it may be too much, in the end it was too little! Should’ve got one each.

We also got the Roti Canai, which was quite unique here as the curry had a Filipino taste to it. We liked it, but it was different to the usual Roti Canai.

They have indoor and outdoor seating. Indoors can feel a little small and intimate (which works for the look they’re going for). They also have a ’secretish’ outdoor/garden seating area where it’s one big bench; perfect for the summer?

Another great reason to visit these guys is the fact they are neighbours to 3 other absolute gems and (some) classics of the London food scene: Guanabana, Mamasons (under renovation) and Panadera.

The only issue...

The only issue here I think is the fact that they still only accept cash (I remember coming here years ago when this was the case and actually even while we were there someone else came in and asked the same thing). The closest ATM is a 2 minute walk away, but it isn’t a free one (I hate them). So, basically come with cash. I would expect a restaurant of this stature to have the facilities in place to accept cards to be honest, it can be the reason why one chooses one of its neighbouring restaurants (and there are good choices) over them. I mean if you have a menu that can be derived using the QR code, you can’t have a card machine? Well, I don’t know, I’m not a restaurant owner. There may well be underlying issues and reasons that I am unaware of. It’s just a small inconvenient blemish on this awesome establishment!
