Top 3 Halal friendly Breakfast Spots in Edinburgh
Looking for good breakfast in Edinburgh?
What is the Scottish Breakfast?
First and foremost, we must mention the full Scottish. How is it different to the full English? It is more or less the same but instead of bubble and squeak you get tattie scones (tattie means potato) and haggis too (for the brave). If you don’t want something too heavy or greasy in the morning, you can also go for porridge or oats; I mean Scotland is the birthplace of oats… In this post I am going to list three places you can get awesome breakfast from when in Edinburgh. The list is in no particular order.
Snax Cafe - Full Scottish Old School
Breakfast has come a long way and in cities like Edinburgh, you will find all sorts to fit your own taste. Whether you are after a breakfast from another part of the world (e.g. India (Dishoom)) or a modern take on classics, you’ll find something. However, as the food world moves forward, a loss is the classic traditional joints. One of those types of establishments is a greasy spoon cafe (British cafe where you can get a full English or full Scottish breakfast at a cheap rate). Snax Cafe in Edinburgh is just that. A cafe where you can get a full Scottish breakfast for cheap prices.

What should you get here? Well to not get the full Scottish would just be rude right? Unfortunately, the meat here is not halal and therefore the full Scottish would be out of the running (don’t worry I have a fully halal option below). Fortunately, this place and actually Edinburgh itself has a huge vegan/vegetarian scene. Meaning there are some awesome options for vegans/vegetarians. So, here you can adjust your full Scottish and replace the meat items with vegan ones. I am told the vegan sausage is delicious!!

We actually opted for their famous breakfast rolls. They have numerous options for fillings and you can also combine as many fillings as you like (I regret not doing this). I opted for the tattie scone roll and she went for the hash brown roll. I think her roll was better, but I wish I had combined a few to make a proper breakfast roll.

They have two branches in the city. We went to the one near our hotel, which was near Arthur’s Seat.
Hata Cafe - Scottish Oats

This cute Scottish oats breakfast spot is so charming. The customer service, the food, the menu. Literally, fell in love with everything. I especially love the fact that the porridge menu changes every week. So, the one we had kind of feels like a souvenir that we took away as it probably cannot be consumed again! We visited on our way to Dean Village.

Zaza's Coffee House - Halal Haggis

A halal full Scottish breakfast was extremely hard to find. And as mentioned before, due to the widespread vegan food scene, there was no real need for a halal breakfast spot (seriously, the vegan scene is sooo good). However, of course I am a meat lover and I need my dose eventually. So, this gem right here was a find that I was extremely proud of. Located right near the Edinburgh castle, it is the perfect stop before you start your Edinburgh castle or Royal Mile exploring day. Try and grab the window seat that has a showstopping view of the Edinburgh castle too.
