On this page we’ve covered Mamasons and Bintang previously, who are both owned by the same people. This bakery right here – Panadera – is another one of their ventures. This one is new to the collection, but in no way any less exciting. Located right next to Guanabana (another one of theirs!) and a few doors down from Mamasons and Bintang making this road surely one of the contenders for best halal roads in London?
They brand themselves as “your neighbourhood Filipino bakery” and that’s the vibe you do get with this place. A quaint bakery that has a warm and fuzzy feeling – you know that bakery feeling? If you know, you know. Panadera means female baker in the Filipino language. And the bakery was inspired by female bakers that are closest to them; their mothers. Mothers play a huge role in ones upbringing, education and nurturing in the Filipino culture. I found this inspiration to be lovely and powerful at the same time. Big up to all the mothers out there: the true unsung heroes!
They’re famous for their Japanese inspired Filipino Sandos and their baked goods. Unfortunately, by the time we got there (2pm) all their baked goodies were sold out!! Shows how popular they are. We were looking forward to trying the ube tart the most from their bakery selection. I guess a good excuse for another visit (this time earlier!).
The sandos are made to order, so we opted to try out both of their offerings: egg sando and corned beef hash sando. My wife’s the sandwich person really so this was right up her street even before the first bite. After the first bite, I was equally in love!! Both of these sandwiches were faultless. The corned beef one had a slightly Asian/oriental taste to it, which added to the complexity of flavours. The egg one was just creamy goodness! The bread was toasted to perfection and it also had a hint of sweetness to it, which just elevated both sandos! Bravo Panadera! Bravo! The egg sando was my personal favourite. The last time I had a sandwich remotely as good was one of those legendary 7/11 egg sandwiches in Beijing. This was that good!
This alone would’ve been enough for us to leave satisfied and come home to write a glowing review. But we also ordered a drink… we got the Pandan frappe. And wow. I was left speechless. It was love at first sip. Literally. You know one of those things you eat/drink and instantly you just fall in love with. This was one of those moments. It was like drinking creamy coconut and vanilla (I don’t know if I painted a good image there?). Couple the creaminess with the firm but jelly-like bites of coconut jelly at the bottom… wow. It’s like a drink and dessert rolled into one! I think this is my new favourite drink in London!
