Chapati Delights at legendary Azmi Restaurant in Singapore

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Little India, Singapore, Azmi Restaurant stands as a testament to the enduring tradition of crafting chapati in its most authentic form. Having graced Norris Road for years, this street-side eatery beckons with the aroma of freshly baked chapati and the promise of a culinary journey into the heart of Indian flavours. Local legends and quite possibly the one authentic chapati spot in the country or prata. This open-air eatery has been a local favourite, serving delectable food with a touch of tradition and in this post we’ll explore why.

The Traditional Experience

Azmi is not just a restaurant; it’s a cultural immersion. The open-air setting, bustling with locals and tourists alike, captures the essence of communal dining. The sizzle of chapatis on the griddle provides a symphony to the vibrant conversations and the clinking of cutlery. Chapati, the star of the show, is a traditional unleavened flatbread, originating from the Indian subcontinent, is a staple in many South Asian households. Crafted with precision and care, each chapati embodies the skill and expertise passed down through generations. The thin, soft rounds are a canvas for the rich flavours that follow. A more healthier version of a paratha or prata as the locals call it.

Curry Companions

At Azmi, the chapati experience is incomplete without its curry companions. Speaking of curries, Azmi provides a choice between vegetarian and meat options. We opted for the daal, a lentil-based vegetarian curry, and the chicken curry. Both were flavourful, with the chicken curry standing out with its rich and aromatic spices. While we enjoyed these choices, we’ve heard that the keema (minced meat curry) is a highlight, so that’s on our list for the next visit.

Local Acclaim

The reputation of Azmi Restaurant extends far beyond its modest facade. Locals often recommend this establishment not just for its culinary delights but for the cultural immersion it offers. It’s a place where the authenticity of flavours meets the warmth of tradition. Upon recommendation by a local resident, we decided to explore Azmi’s offerings. The star of the show, the chapati, is a must-try. The simplicity of this bread allows the accompanying curries to shine. And we definitely recommend the chicken curry, it is packed full of flavour and this combo works well any time of the day; for lunch, dinner or if you’re brave, even for breakfast.

Azmi Restaurant on Norris Road is more than a dining spot; it’s a pilgrimage for chapati enthusiasts. As the sun sets over Little India, savouring a meal at Azmi becomes a timeless experience, a taste of tradition that transcends the ordinary. In the hustle of Singapore’s culinary scene, Azmi Restaurant stands as a beacon, a place where the heritage of chapati-making is not just preserved but celebrated with every bite.
