How often will you get a chance to hike up an ancient volcano? Here in Edinburgh, you will get that chance!
Arthur's Seat: Edinburgh's ancient volcano hike!

When in Edinburgh, Arthur’s Seat is a must see and for the hiking enthusiasts, must climb.

It is located in Holyrood Park, which is at the end of the Royal Mile. It can be seen on the horizon as you explore different parts of the city. What you see is vast areas of greenery and hills – lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. These hills are an extinct volcano that erupted 350 million years ago! And Arthur’s Seat is the peak of this extinct volcano.

The origin of the name is uncertain, but some claim it is the place where King Arthur won a battle.

Tips:

• go there early (before 9am)- fewer people.
• hike will take 1 hour to the top. So, give yourself a couple of hours.
• there are numerous routes up there – the easy ones you sacrifice on views.
• wear appropriate footwear.
• if you drive there, you can park in the holyrood park car park for £1 an hour. But this park and roads leading to it is closed for cars on weekends. There is parking on the roads outside – Sundays are free.
• if hiking is not your thing, it’s still worth going there – don’t have to even go that high up to get stunning panoramic views.
• we stayed in a hotel right next to this place, so we were able to walk it there.

A must see/do when in Edinburgh.
