When in Scotland you have to try Scottish oats/ porridge. And there’s no better place in Edinburgh to try it than here!
This was one of our favourite breakfast spots in Edinburgh. It had the lot – the charm, the cozy decor, good food inspired by local customs and awesome awesome customer service.
Hata means home in Polish and this sums of the feeling of this place. Very homely. And you can see by the number of local customers popping in to get their fix that it’s very popular. It is a cafe that does breakfast and lunch, where you’ll find porridge, sandwiches, cake and coffee. All of high quality. It was opened by a lovely couple back in December 2020 who were inspired by their travels around the world (this kind of reminded us of us). They wanted to offer food that was local and what’s more local in Edinburgh than Scottish oats! The home of porridge! They also offer some good cakes that are inspired by her culture e.g. the honey cake.
The star of the show is of course the porridge. And what we found to be very cool is that they have a menu that changes every week. Yes, you read that right. Every week. Every week you’ll get two innovative porridge concoctions to try. I love this concept as it gives it that exclusive feel and also you just won’t get bored. The idea that the porridge that we had was only available that week feels like a souvenir we picked up on our Edinburgh travels.
What we got:
Porridge – raspberry compote, peanut butter, banana and crushed brownies.
Honey cake
Biscoff iced latte
All perfect. The latte was strong in coffee flavour, so if you’re not into coffee, it may not be for you. The porridge was superb. I mean cmon crushed brownies!? The honey cake was fantastic too. Creamy and the right amount of sweet.
They also sell sustainable and eco-friendly products that they source from an Indonesian contact. We were gifted a straw (thank you!). The customer service was excellent. They really make you feel at home as if you were a local. I can see why this is popular amongst the locals.
If you’re visiting Edinburgh, be sure to check this place out. Also, ask them about their food or their travels – you’ll see their passion through their speech and they’ve got stories for days and they are lovely enough to share them with you.
We visited this place on our way to Dean Village (a must see in Edinburgh).
They open at 8:30 in the morning and close at 3:30pm and they’re closed on Tuesdays. They also have a bathroom at the back, so that’s perfect for on the road travelers. All in all a must visit when in Edinburgh.
