One of the things I love doing on my travels abroad is visiting the local convenience stores and supermarkets. I love finding interesting and new goodies that I wouldn’t find in England. Beijing had some of the best finds and stores I have come across thus far (click here to read the post on 7-11). In this post I’ll highlight some of the unique things I tried during my stay in Beijing.
Drinks
Sprite cucumber – this had a subtle yet a brilliant flavour. My favourite drink I had there. I have been craving this the most since then!
Watermelon Fanta – I love watermelon, but this did not work.
Peach Fanta – nothing memorable.
Coca Cola clear lime – this definitely looks and sounds cooler than it is. I means it’s decent, but I’d only get it to say I’ve had a clear coke.
Coca Cola coffee – this unique flavour came out on the last day of my stay there and what a shame! I had tried a fizzy coffee drink there earlier, but it did not taste good. I could not finish it. However, this Coca Cola version was so so good! The coffee flavour was there along with the classic coke taste. It’s hard to put in words, but it was spot on in terms of the balance of flavours. I’m just gutted it came out at the end of my stay and so I could only have it that once.
Also tried 7up watermelon mojito, Sprite coconut and Pepsi salted caramel, but honestly don’t remember how they tasted.
Cold tea drinks – the green, red and jasmine tea cold bottle sections would probably be one of the biggest in stores in China. There are so many options – so much to choose from. Some drinks were pure tea and so a bitter. Some were fruity e.g. this really good plum flavoured one. And some were a bit sweeter. My personal favourite was the honey flavoured jasmine tea. As you can see I would stock up on this flavour!
Beijing yoghurt drink – this is a classic Beijing drink that is drunk for breakfast or just as a snack.
Coconut milk – this is something I first noticed on the flight to China. I noticed that everyone was ordered this white drink and so I did so too. It was delicious coconut milk. Unfortunately, not fully natural as there is sugar included to make it sweeter.
Snacks
Onigiri – an absolute Japanese classic. Triangular shaped rice balls. Sushi like qualities but nothing like it at the same time. The rice balls are usually stuffed with cooked goodies. The ones I had were shrimp and tuna. But the spicy fish egg one was my absolute favourite. Another thing I crave! I also had Eel sushi – don’t remember it tasting too different.
Pineapple bun – these are famous particular in Hong Kong breakfast cafes. A popular snack or breakfast. Slightly sweet top layer and sometimes the bun is filled too. Funnily enough, this has nothing to do with pineapples other than the fact that it looks like one. Something to note here is that pineapple buns usually use lard, but not always. So, do double check before you get yourself one of these.
Egg Sando – the Japanese convenience stores are known for their Sandos (and onigiri). This one is an absolute classic. Delicious and sweet egg filling. Don’t think I’ve ever had a better egg sandwich.
Tuna Sando – again the best tuna sandwich I’ve had, but I prefer the egg one.
Pocky – where has this snack been all my life? Chocolate flavoured biscuit sticks. The amount flavours on show here were fascinating. Literally fascinating.
Lays cucumber – the crisps section is always one of the most interesting sections. A very unique flavour this one.
Lays wasabi – this had a nice twang.
Lays yam crisps – I don’t remember much about this.
Oreo birthday cake – the amount of Oreo flavours to choose from was impressive. One of my favourites was the birthday cake filling.
Hershey’s Lychee – as you can see from the image, a number of different and unique Hershey’s flavours too.
