Ramo Ramen: the only fully halal ramen spot in London

Halal ramen is pretty hard to find in London, so when the founders of the popular Mamasons, came up with Ramo Ramen, we were very excited and had to check it out. These are the same people behind Guanabana, Bintang, Panadera, as well as the aforementioned Mamasons. All of which, in their own way, have taken London by storm and have a loyal following and fan base. So, hopes were high for this ramen spot.

Soho and Kentish Town

Excitingly for the people of Camden and West London, they have two branches. They combine two cuisines (Filipino and Japanese) to serve up some very interesting concoctions. Check out their menu here. Very innovative and creative.

We visited the Soho branch. The restaurant is cozy, small and has a date night kind of vibe to it. Quite similar to Bintang. We ordered fried chicken katsu donburi, oxtail kare kare ramen and calamansi ade to drink. Before discussing the food, it was quite disappointing to see the alcohol on their menu. Traditionally, they never served alcohol in their other restaurants, which we respected and appreciated, so this was quite a disappointment.

The food

The katsu donburi was delicious as a katsu usually is to be honest. It’s one of those safe dishes that is always a good idea. The drink was refreshing and much needed in the heat. Now, onto the main event and the reason for coming here: the ramen! We opted for the Oxtail one as we didn’t want to get the chicken one because we had the katsu and the lobster one was very expensive (£32!), so the other one that caught our eye was this one. How did it taste? It was on the earthy side and the peanut-based broth had a strong and prominent peanut taste (duhhh). This was of course the point, but my personal preference of noodles is spicy (and or tangy). This was quite the opposite and it had no spice to it whatsoever, but I think that’s the point with a peanut-based broth. I feel some chilli oil or something would’ve gone nicely here to add a kick. However, I cannot fault them for my own taste bud now can I?
