On our recent visit to Birmingham we had to check out Phat Jo’s (@phatjos.birmingham). This small trailer in Birmingham serves up some delicious smash burgers, so much so that many claim it to be the best in the city! They have a nice simple menu which isn’t overpopulated with unnecessary items. They’ve got beef burgers; you can choose either smash or Angus. Each burger comes in a brioche bun, with cheese, lettuce and a special sauce. They’ve also got grilled chicken options (burger or strips) and chips. I think all very reasonably priced with the cheapest burger being £4.50.
The concept
I love the concept. There aren’t many halal burger vans/trailers in England, so they’ve certainly tapped into a niche. I love it! It gives off street food vibes as you can watch them make your burger and you can smell the awesome burger van fragrance (you know which one right?)! This had some sold! How can you not be tempted and dragged into having and giving into a burger craving (maybe unless you’re vegan?).
Our experience
How did it taste? The quality ingredients shone through and the burgers were exactly how I like it. Simple in its construction (i.e. not flooded with complex and unnecessary toppings), but flavourful due to the focus being on the key ingredient: the meat!
The guys running it are lovely and very welcoming. They’ll happily talk to you and answer any questions you may have with a big smile on their face. They’ve been around for over 3 years now and here’s to many many years to come!
