Dolce Vyta: The best cream bun or Maritozzo in London

Come with us as we try the viral Maritozzo from @dolcevyta_matteomanzotti in Covent Garden London. London is not short of wonderful and creative desserts from around the world and this is no different. Dolce Vyta are bringing you a nice creamy bite of Italy right to your door in London. There are many worthy of being called the must try dessert of the summer in London. Like the churros, we’ve featured on here or the handmade chocolate bars, but this one right here is definitely right up there and without even trying it, it may be the one I’m looking forward to the most. I’m a sucker for cream…

Who are Dolce Vyta

Dolce Vyta is the coming together of the head chef of Vyta, Filippo Bellani, and Matteo Manzotti, who is supposedly one of the most exciting young chefs coming out of Italy. So, let’s just put it this way… this Italian cream bun or Maritozzo that you’re getting in London is going to be as authentic as it gets and hopefully as delicious as you’d get in the heart of Italian towns and cities.

What is the Maritozzo?

This Maritozzo has become one of the hottest desserts in London this summer. So, what is it? A Maritozzo is basically an Italian cream bun. A generous amount of cream (specifically Chantilly cream and madagascan vanilla) is filled in a bun making it a somewhat of a cream sandwich. Then, here you get to choose between some glazes to go over that cream (the choices are caramel, dark chocolate, white chocolate, ruby chocolate and pistachio) and then you can also top all of that off with some fun toppings of your choice.

Location

The area of Covent Garden London is not short of quirky cafes and delicious niche eateries. So, I feel their offerings fit right in to this area. And this is evident as people are queuing up to try this treat here. This is definitely one of the must visit dessert spots in London this summer. And I am sure this success will continue into the foreseeable future.

Our experience

How did it taste? I love cream, so anything that has this amount of cream in it, I’m instantly going to be a fan. To summarise, this is a delicious cream filled dessert which actually isn’t too heavy. It may look overwhelming and heavy, but the cream is actually quite light and there’s even a slight hint of a citrus note in the air. Making this cream dessert actually light and fairly easy to eat. Easy to eat in terms of it not being heavy though. As in terms of the handling of it and the practicality of actually eating it is quite a challenge. Let’s put it this way: there’s no way of eating this without making a mess. We got the caramel glaze which complemented the cream excellently. The bun held its own so that wasn’t a problem. I guess the messiness is just the price you have to pay for the GENEROUS amount of cream you enjoy.

The price of the classic maritozzo (without glaze or toppings) is £5. And then each glaze is £1. Some may claim this is expensive, but I really do feel people forget we are living in 2024 and this is London AND this is Covent Garden in London!

There was a little thing that happened that I felt a little awkward or uncomfortable about and tbh I didn’t know if it should be mentioned here or not, but hey why not. Now, I may come across as a little entitled here, but considering this is a super viral place in a very touristy spot, I would expect them to be ok with people taking videos. But when I was taking videos inside the shop (after asking permission as I always do) they made me feel uncomfortable. They weren’t rude or anything, but just small things like they rushed the making of the bun even though I asked to record that particular part and then one of them hid under the counter, literally HID under the counter… Odd.

Is it halal?

Yes, no alcohol or meat derived ingredients are used in the making of the Maritozzo. We were told to double check with the toppings though.
