Embarking on a culinary adventure, we recently explored the viral sensation that is Solis Grill, an exquisite spot nestled in the iconic Battersea Power Station. This halal Latin American gem has been making waves, and our tasting experience left us eager to share the delight. Quite possibly the most popular thing on the menu and what is catching everyone’s attention is the steak and fries, is something we really wanted to try. The restaurant is named after the first European explorer to set foot on Uruguay. Their primary focus is on grilled chicken and steak, with influences from Spain, Portugal, Uruguay, and Argentina. We tried a few things from their menu and below is our experience.

Bread with olive oil & Croquetas

As soon as you sit you are greeted with on-the-house bread and olive oil, which provides a great welcome and sets the scene for what is to come. Our journey really kicked off with the tantalising Croquetas. These bite-sized wonders, with a crispy exterior giving way to a creamy interior, set the tone for the feast to come. It is made up of beef, caramelised onions and a hint of mustard. It was delicious and the perfect starter.

Chicken Sub

Onto the mains. The first thing we got was the chicken bocadillo (sub). A symphony of flavours unfolded with the chicken sub—a harmonious blend of succulent chicken, and an amazing green sauce encased in a soft, warm brioche sub roll. The coriander and the olives in the green sauce really gave it a wonderful fresh kick that was different to what we’ve had. Each bite offered a delightful medley of textures and tastes. Loved this and highly recommend it too.

Steak and Fries

The star of the show was, undoubtedly, the grileld steak combinado, aka steak and fries. Cooked to perfection, the grilled flat iron steak boasted a tantalising char on the outside and a juicy, tender inside. Paired with a generous serving of golden fries, this dish stood out as a testament to Solis Grill’s culinary mastery. The Solis steak sauce that went on top of the steak was amazing with a capital A! It had a great peppery taste with a slightly citrusy twist. Really impressive. I am thinking about it to this day! I would definitely recommend this despite it being quite expensive. The only thing here may be that the portion of fries you get for how much you pay is a little underwhelming.

Burnt Basque Cheesecake

To finish off this wonderful meal, we got the Torta de Queso. A creamy cheesecake with berry sauce. A sweet crescendo awaited us in the form of the burnt Basque cheesecake. The velvety texture, rich flavour, and slight smokiness of the burnt exterior made this dessert a fitting conclusion to our feast. And the addition of the berry sauce took me by surprise. I really didn’t think it needed it nor would it work, but boy did it work. It was subtle and not too strong on the tartiness level, so it went well with the cheesecake. There were a couple of large sea salt pieces on the cheesecake, which I didn’t like when biting into. I didn’t want that salty taste when eating my cheesecake.

Blackberry and Lime Drink

Complementing the savoury delights was the refreshing and sweet blackberry and lime drink—a vibrant concoction that added a burst of fruity goodness to the overall experience.

Solis Grill not only excelled in crafting a menu that tantalises the taste buds but also in curating an experience. The contemporary yet warm ambiance of the eatery, combined with impeccable service, elevated the overall dining experience. As we savoured the last bites and sips, it became evident why Solis Grill has garnered such acclaim. The meticulous attention to flavours, the quality of ingredients, and the fusion of Latin American culinary traditions with a halal twist make Solis Grill a standout destination. Unfortunately though, they do serve alcohol.
