Japanese Souffle Pancakes in London

Japanese Souffle Pancakes are taking over social media right. You cannot be a foodie and be on social and not have noticed them yet. They are intriguing, pretty and different enough to tempt food lovers to give them a try. London is keeping up with this trend and they offer some amazing restaurants and cafes that do these beautiful pancakes and they’re appropriate for the halal diet!

What is a Japanese Souffle Pancake?

What sets them apart from your standard American style pancake or even the thinner British style ones are in both its appearance and taste. In terms of appearance they are evidently a lot more voluminous – so easily distinguishable. They get this looks thanks to the cooking procedure. As the name suggests it is a wonderful combination between a souffle and a pancake. Bravo to whoever thought of this! In terms of its taste it is airy, fluffy and light – again thanks to the souffle half of the combo.  Some also get a slight eggyness. And this is point of contention: you’ll find strong conflicted views on this dessert. Some love it claiming it to be the best thing since sliced bread while some dislike it so much so that they never want to go near it again. I feel this dislike may be due to the slight eggy taste they may have got or that they are trying to compare it to American pancakes. I’ve heard claims such as “they taste of nothing”… that is kind of the point. So, that’s why I feel it is crucial to get the right toppings. I love it to be honest. And here I will detail four spots that do the best Japanese Souffle Pancakes in London and they are all suitable for the halal diet.

Fuwa Fuwa

The UK’s first Japanese Souffle pancake cafe! This cafe was on the scene early. They popped up years ago well before it actually became a trend. They have two stores: Brunswick and a new one in Soho. Their cafe decor is clean, minimalistic and classy as opposed to the current trend of pretty pink and flower walls (and usually no substance). We got Japanese Souffle pancakes with honeycomb butter. And at the time it became the best dessert I have ever had! Light. Fluffy. Right amount of sweet. Wow. Some have stated they taste eggyness here, but we didn’t whatsoever.

Hefaure

The next one is quite popular and trendy and that might be due to the location. It is in Chinatown. Blink and you’ll miss it though. You basically order at the door and wait and eat it outside. Usually, there are long queues at this place, so you probably won’t miss it afterall. With any place that becomes as popular as this one, you’ll get a tonne of mixed reviews. My qualm is that everyone I see on Instagram keeps going for the usual Biscoff flavour – like aren’t you tired of this flavour yet? And I honestly think the flavour does not complement the pancakes well here. What you really need to get here is the brown sugar tapioaca one. Warm Japanese Souffle pancake + warm brown sugar tapioca pearls + cold cream. Fluffy. Creamy. Chewy. Tell me this ain’t genius. I dare you.

Honourable mentions

The other two spots deserve honourable mentions as I have not visited them yet, so I cannot really comment on them or vouch for their quality. They do seem popular on Instagram though.

Cha Cha Roll just outisde of Chinatown does some amazing eats you cannot get elsewhere like the suhsi rolls and their katsu curry is to die for! But they also do Japanese Souffle pancakes. They seem to have numerous interesting flavours too.

Coffee Addict on Vauxhall Bridge Road is new on the scene. And they are taking the scene by storm! Quite particularly their ube souffle pancakes. Combining Filipino and Japanese ideas into a beautiful masterpiece!
