Triple B in Manchester do two American New York classics: Salt Beef and Reuben bagels. Unfortunately and surprisingly, very difficult to get halal versions of these two iconic dishes in England. So, as soon as we heard these guys in Manchester do these authentic bagels and that it is halal, we had to check them out.
The Reuben sandwich is made up of corned beef or pastrami (this one was pastrami), sauerkraut, grilled Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. It typically comes in between rye bread, but here it was served in a seeded bagel. The salt beef bagel is made up of cured salt beef, mustard and pickle. As well as being a New York favourite, it is also a super popular cheap eat in London – tourists always flock to the famous Brick Lane bagel (spelt Beigel) spots to try it. However, it isn’t halal nor is it kosher (strangely considering it was originally a Jewish spot, but anywho).
Our experience
Simple. We absolutely loved it! The Reuben bagel was superb! Despite the whopping amount of meat, it was not overwhelming nor was there a meaty taste at all. My wife doesn’t like that overpowering meat taste and so she usually opts for chicken when eating out. But this one she absolutely loved. Even asking for the final bites! Pastrami is delicious!! Soo soooo good. I honestly cannot remember the last time we had something different and for the first time and loving it as much as this.
The Salt Beef was also very good, but we had the Reuben first and that set the bar. This did not overtake the Reuben. It smelt like canned tuna/beef, but thankfully it tasted better! Again not meaty at all, but I think some pickle on the side would’ve gone well with this. Nonetheless, delicious. And certainly lived up to its status of being an iconic and legendary dish.
We decided to try the Grill Melt Bagel too and we were super impressed. It is basically like the Salt Beef one above, but with an added grilled cheese. Stunning! This was so good it challenged the Reuben to be fair. We also ordered angel fries. Exchanging Parmesan for vegan cheese sauce. This was equally wonderful! A tad salty, but the flavours were definitely there!
Overall
Everything was exceptional, but the Reuben bagel was definitely the best thing we had! It was so impressive. It left the both of us talking about it for days after! It’s so good it may even be worth the drive up to Manchester! We will certainly be returning for it! And we did! Strangely, the second time round it wasn’t as good and it was slightly different as there was an added slice of brisket in there for some reason. Nonetheless, it was still top tier grub though of course. Do not sleep on the Grill Melt Bagel!!
