Is the Kinako French toast from Shackfuyu overrated? I’m going to answer the question in a different unexpected manner. But before I do, let me give you my thoughts on the dessert. We thought it was decent, but it didn’t really blow us away. I’ve seen claims of it being the best dessert (not just french toast) in London, so my hopes going in were high. And they just weren’t met. However, the reason for this is because I think how you feel about this dessert will depend on whether you like matcha or not. We aren’t matcha fans… The matcha flavour wasn’t too strong to make it overpowering and overwhelming, so we were still able to enjoy it. The toast was super unique and we loved that, it’s just the soft serve that comes with it. If there was a non-matcha flavour, we would’ve loved it! Simple vanilla or maybe lychee to be fruity, or earl grey to stick to the tea theme, or black sesame to stick to the Asian theme, or even pandan to stick to the Asian and green theme! I feel incorporating at least one non-matcha soft serve into the menu can make it that top tier experience for the matcha haters.
But hey it’s evidently very popular. We asked on our Instagram stories the other day about your views and I got responses like:
– my fave!
– omg love it!
– the best!
– my only go to London dessert!
I mean Shackfuyu are clearly confident in this dessert and it is something in demand as it is the only dessert on the menu. A menu which is actually very expansive with a lot of wonderful options (not sure how halal it is though), but to only have one dessert on the menu, it definitely portrays confidence and somewhat of a swagger (which I personally love).
Rant time…
So, does that mean this is overrated? Rant time. I feel the word “overrated” is this buzz word that’s just being thrown out there very loosely and you’ll find it in every other negative review. But let’s take a look at what the word entails. To say something is overrated is basically saying that it has been rated highly by many people and done so incorrectly. But since taste is subjective (believe it or not), how can we say they’re incorrect in saying they like the taste of something? I see this criticism being made of a lot of food reviews by non-food reviewers. If you didn’t like it, you didn’t like it. To say it’s overrated means the majority have lied or got it wrong? But just because you didn’t like it, does it mean it ain’t good? And on the flip side – if you say a lot say it’s overrated, then is it even rated? I see some places have so much negative reviews and everyone just claims it’s overrated, but I wonder who even rates it?? End of rant.
