Disclaimer: we realised a few weeks after this review that Burgerism pre-stun their animals, yet they declare their meats to be Halal. There is great discussion on this matter of pre-stunning that has been done by the people of Islamic knowledge (please do your own research and go with credible people you trust). However, the crux of the matter is that if the animal is not killed after being stunned and prior to the actual slaughtering, then it is deemed Halal. But many take the opinion that with chickens there is a fine line and that stunning CAN cause death and so they recommend to be on the safe side to stay away. At the same time, there are Halal governing bodies like HFA who notoriously do stun their chickens too and declare it Halal. So, do your research and go with what you’re comfortable with. Sheeps and cows, on the other hand, are strong enough to survive a stunning process and they definitely DO NOT die due to stunning. But as always, this is a food and travel blog and not an Islamic knowledge one, please do your own research.
Burgers are quite a big deal in Manchester, especially spicy chicken burgers. But this post will focus on another burger and specifically a burger joint. Burgerism is a burger joint based in an industrial estate in Salford Manchester that sells over 1000 burgers a day and it is home to the best selling burger on Deliveroo in Manchester! So, I think it’s only fair we dedicate a blog post and do a proper review on these guys.
About Burgerism
You wouldn’t expect food coming out of an industrial estate to be much of a big deal, but this is quite the opposite. It’s taken the Manchester social media food scene by storm. Not only are they based in an industrial estate, but they also operate from what is known as a dark kitchen. A dark kitchen is an eatery operating from within a small kitchen space and providing a delivery/take away only service. The pandemic gave birth to numerous dark kitchen concepts throughout the country, but Burgerism claim to be one of the first to do so in Manchester! They also claim to be one of the first to do smash patties in Manchester, that is smash burgers. Where the burger patty is “smashed” and flattened till it is almost paper thin. When done right, it tastes like butter and it is far more consumable than a normal burger in my humble opinion. The Wholly Double is the burger that is doing the rounds on social media and Deliveroo it seems because this is the one that has accumulated the most burger sales on the platform. That’s some feat!
How to order
If you’re not using a delivery app and like to pick up your burger, you have to use their website to order online ahead of time. The instructions are fairly clear as to how to order and what the next steps are. Please follow this link.
We were told our order will be ready within half an hour and so it was. We went to their car park (there was plenty of space) and the order came out exactly when we were told. Fast and efficient.
The wholly double
This is the prized possession, the main character, the star of the show, the one that is grabbing all the headlines. The best selling burger on Deliveroo in Manchester is this bad boy. And boy is it a bad boy. Four smash patties, four slices of American cheese, turkey bacon, plus other stuff (veg) all in a soft brioche bun. They take pride in their packaging and this is evident. They realise the burger opening procedure has become a sensation in and of itself and so customers send in their burger openings to them on a daily basis. Just take a look at our opening here. How was the taste? It was delicious and I can certainly see the reason for the hype. Everything comes together so smoothly and the result is just a harmonious gathering in the mouth! It does come at a hefty price though at £13.95 for the burger alone! It is four patties though and the quality is right up there I have to admit. A top quality smash burger right here!
The free bird
I feel it would be a crime to go to a Manchester burger joint and not try their chicken burger. This is of course part of our wider “research” into the best spicy chicken burger in Manchester. The burger was delicious, nice and juicy with the right amount of sauciness. It didn’t quite have the kick of other spicy chicken burgers in Manchester, but then again I don’t think it was advertised as a spicy chicken burger. The quality of the ingredients are evident, from the potato bun to the chicken. However, with it being priced at £13.95, it’s hard to fight its corner when compared to the options that are there in Manchester. It was really good, but not £13.95 good! You can almost get 3 Miami meals for that price!!
All the meat is halal and local sourced.
