The tres leches or milk cake is a South American dessert that has become super popular in England – you’ll now find chip shops, burger joints, cafes, oriental chai spots and many others offering their versions of this treat! It gets its name because of the three different types of milk used – milk, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The result is a soft, moist sponge cake. It is most commonly topped off with whipped cream, but you’ll find some wonderful innovations.
The Turkish Version
The Turkish variation is famous for its vibrant caramel topping.
A small dessert spot in London called Antepzade (right next to Gokyuzu) offer some of the best of this Turkish kind, supposedly. I had heard of its viral status. A blogger went there, tried it and everyone followed and likewise loved it.
First visit
The first time I tried it, I did like it, but it didn’t wow me. It wasn’t anything special – I was actually left underwhelmed due to the hype it had received. Also, I found the caramel topping overly sweet – the amount you can’t have too much of. My wife couldn’t even have the topping. Mind you, it’s a looker though ain’t it!? Stunning! Now, here’s the strange thing… I was actually craving this. I wanted to go back and try it again. There’s something addictive about it. This one left me confused.
Second visit
After trying the Hafiz Mustafa version in Istanbul recently and totally becoming addicted to it (read here), I had to go back and give it a try. And this time round I loved it! It was actually really similar to the Hafiz Mustafa version (not as good). I was very impressed and I feel I didn’t appreciate it the first time round. We also trying the raspberry version and it was delicious, but definitely not as good as the caramel one.
