One of the most popular and must try places in Penang, Malaysia is this super authentic George Town breakfast spot. Transfer Road Roti Canai, due to social media, has become a “celebrity” spot. You’ll find local Malay and tourists alike snapping away their cameras here to take in the wonderful roadside eatery experience. Dining here is definitely an experience.
Owned and run by South Indians, they’ve been open for over 40 years! Every morning they open nice and early (around 7am) and close at around noon. And that’s it. You better get there at 6:55 though, as it gets super busy. I don’t know about you, but I love waking up early while on holiday to get the adventure started, so what better incentive than this super authentic breakfast! Locals and tourists alike flock here super fast and super early. Seating is on the road with some under somewhat a roof, but still outdoor. Which is an awesome experience. It gets soo busy they take over other shop spaces to fit in the customers.

What do they serve? Roti Canai (flatbread with curry – can get chicken or lentil), teh tarik (delicious pulled milk tea) and kaya toast (regrettably, we did not get it from here – we instead waited to try it at a super awesome place that does it in Singapore). The Roti Canai was delicious. The roti (flatbread) was made fresh and it was super flaky and the chicken curry was rich and packed full of flavour. The roti was served under the curry so it was already soaked in all that curry goodness. I prefer my roti separate to the curry though to keep that flaky texture, so I would’ve preferred it if they served it separate, but my wife likes it served together. The teh tarik was expectedly super milky and super sweet as were all teh tariks we tried in Malaysia. So delicious and a great accompaniment to the meal.
I love early morning experiences on holiday and dining where locals dine. It’s an awesome experience. They say the food here isn’t as good as it used to be, but what they served us here was the best Roti Canai we had in Malaysia and we had a few!
