Embarking on a road trip from Jakarta to West Java’s Bandung region is a true adventure, and it’s all about the journey, not just the destination. With the promise of visiting an active volcano, our road trip was set to be an epic exploration of the natural wonders and cultural richness of Indonesia. This incredible experience took us through a diverse landscape, offering glimpses of the local way of life and some unforgettable tastes along the way.
The Scenic Drive Through Subang
As we set out from Jakarta, we knew we were in for a road trip filled with captivating scenery. The journey through Subang, a region with a small island-like atmosphere, felt authentic and local. The landscapes painted the backdrop for an adventure that would take us deep into the heart of West Java.
Exotic Fruit Market: A Tropical Tasting Adventure
Our first stop was a vibrant fruit market. Here, we had the opportunity to sample exotic fruits like Salak, also known as snakeskin fruit, and yellow watermelon. Salak’s unique texture and flavour, often described as a cross between jackfruit, apple, and banana, offered a delightful introduction to Indonesia’s tropical fruits. Yellow watermelon is just watermelon that is yellow. Cool though.
Rice Fields: A Cultural Landscape
Indonesia’s rice fields are more than just agricultural land; they’re an integral part of the country’s culture. Our stop at the rice fields gave us insights into the significance of rice in Indonesian life. Despite consuming rice three times a day, we noted the absence of pot bellies—a testament to the portion sizes that form a staple of their diet.
The Star Attraction: The Active Volcano
The highlight of our journey was, without a doubt, the active volcano. The weather shifted dramatically as we ascended, creating an eerie yet captivating atmosphere. Gazing upon the active volcano, it felt like observing a slumbering giant, waiting for the moment to awaken. The sight was beyond words, an experience we will forever cherish.
A Feast at a Local Restaurant
After the awe-inspiring volcano visit, we enjoyed a sumptuous meal at a local restaurant. Sate ayam, water spinach, and tempeh were among the dishes that graced our table. The delicious spread in a beautiful setting was the perfect way to refuel.
Luwak Coffee: More Than Just “Poop Coffee”
Our road trip took an educational turn as we explored luwak coffee, informally known as “poop coffee.” Civets eat coffee berries, and the beans remain in their excrement for 12 hours before being collected, cleaned, and served. The price may be steep in Europe, but the process and the taste are truly remarkable. It is known to be one of the most expensive coffees in the world.
Tea Plantation: Vast and Serene
Our visit to a tea plantation provided yet another stunning perspective of Indonesia’s natural beauty. With vast tea fields stretching before us, we learned about the importance of tea in Indonesian culture, with jasmine tea being their national beverage.
A Relaxing Hot Spring
A peaceful hot spring offered a tranquil interlude in our adventure. Surrounded by lush scenery, this serene spot even offered foot or body massages, all performed by friendly male masseuses.
Sweet Pineapple Delight
Our final stop was at a sweet pineapple stall, where we indulged in the national fruit of the region. Alongside the pineapples, we sampled fried tempeh, a delightful end to our culinary journey.
This excursion from Jakarta to West Java’s Bandung region was nothing short of a grand adventure. It allowed us to immerse ourselves in the diverse landscapes and cultures of Indonesia, all leading to the magnificent sight of an active volcano. Along the way, we savoured the exotic fruits, enjoyed authentic Indonesian cuisine, and learned about local traditions. This journey was a testament to the treasures awaiting those who venture off the beaten path in this remarkable part of the world. It was a 3 hour road trip though, so before booking the excursion do take that into consideration. You’ll be on the road for 6 hours in total, but they do stop half way for a half an hour bathroom break at a service station. Their service stations are nice and clean with some local and international eateries and cafes.
