Ji Chickens vs Monga: Taiwanese Fried Chicken in London

Fried chicken is probably a lot of people’s guilty pleasure (I know it is mine!). Taiwanese fried chicken takes fried chicken to the next level. One of the most if not the most popular street food items of Taiwan! The most notable thing is the size, HUGE is an understatement. You usually get to choose from a variety of spices to liven up the chicken too – choose wisely. In London’s Chinatown there are actually a couple of Taiwanese fried chicken spots, that are halal too, so you have options to try this street food staple. They are Ji Chickens and Monga Fried Chicken.

Ji Chicken

The most popular and famous spot is Ji Chickens shop – this is evident as you see the permanent queues outside the shop. We had to wait over an hour the first time we tried it. The man behind Ji Chicken is Roger Jen, a Taiwanese gentleman who was missing his hometown and in particular the food. So, he decided to bring a little bit of his food and culture to the people of London. The main and first branch is in Chinatown, but Ji’s success has led to branches being opened all throughout the country including in Leeds, Cardiff and Cambridge. Let’s talk about the food though. The chicken is fried using delicious secret spices and then you get to choose from 12 flavour powders; catering for every taste bud. Other than the fried chicken and few odd other fried goodies, there’s also an extensive bubble tea menu to choose from.

Monga Fried Chicken

However, we think Monga does it better. It is cleaner (hygiene rating included), no queues and the chicken tasted better. Monga is supposedly the district that is home to Taiwanese culture, so this spot aims to deliver that authentic taste to the people of London. The chicken is marinated with honey before being dipped in batter (this is as opposed to using dry flour). They have a few bubble tea drinks on their menu too, but their menu isn’t as big and extensive as Ji Chicken.
