If you are visiting the Top of Europe or Interlaken in Switzerland, you cannot leave without exploring Grindelwald. It is probably our favourite little village in the region. We fell in love with it and was easily our favourite part of the region.
How to get there
Interlaken OST train station to Grindelwald station
Walk to the bus stop right next to the station – get the 121 bus to Firstbahn (or can walk – it’ll take 5-10 mins)
Then you get on the Cable car to FIRST
How much it will cost you (CHF)
TOP OF EUROPE pass – 229 / 179 (half fare) – 3 day pass (no longer valid from April 2023)
We got the above pass, but there are other passes you can get such as the Berner Oberland Pass and the JUNGFRAU TRAVEL PASS, which will be sufficient if Grindelwald is all you would like to experience. Meaning, the top of Europe is not included in these two. And so it will actually be cheaper than the above.
How much time you will need for this
We left Interlaken at 10 am and left Grindelwald at around 3 pm. There are numerous things you can do up there and you can easily end up spending most part of your day there.
How was it and is it worth it?
Grindelwald is fascinating, pretty, dramatic and there is so much to do. There’s mountains, pretty buildings, snow, activities for all thrill seeker levels. You can easily spend a whole day there. You can hire out sledges or ski equipment and go sledging or skiing. You can also go paragliding or hiking. But what most go there to do is the First Cliff Walk. It is a bucket list thing to do for sure. Just look at the pictures! It was our favourite overall part of the trip. As mentioned in the top of Europe post, the single most best experience was the top due to the thrill and exhilaration, but overall Grindelwald is stunning. There’s so much to do and see. As mentioned, you can take part in a number of the activities or just enjoy the cable ride or just soak in the views or take a stroll through one of the most picturesque villages in Europe.
