Exotic Fruits Malaysia: rambutan mangosteen & dragonfruit
Malaysia is the perfect country to try exotic fruits due to its climate. Here, we detail our experience of trying rambutan, mangosteen and dragonfruit.
Trying Exotic Fruits in Malaysia

One of the best things of traveling to exotic countries is trying exotic and unique fruits that you wouldn’t usually have even seen. Malaysia is no different and probably one of the best places to try exotic fruits due to its climate. On one of our night adventures we picked up some exotic fruits to try out back at the hotel. We got rambutan, dragonfruit and mangosteen. This post is going to detail a little bit about them and what we thought of them too. On a different occasion we did also try the infamous exotic fruit, that is the durian (read about our experience here). 

Rambutan 

This is the Malaysian cousin of the famous lychee. It gets its name due to the hairy outer – ‘rambut’ in Malay means hair. The exterior is just so vibrant! Don’t you think it’s beautiful? Don’t let the intimidating hairy exterior put you off.

Our thoughts:

Once you open it up it looks and feels just like a lychee. Taste wise though, it was similar, but distinctive at the same time. It just wasn’t as sweet as a lychee. I love lychee and after experiencing this, I still do! 

Dragonfruit 

From the three fruits on this list, this is probably the one that more readily available in England right now. Dragonfruit, or formally known as pitaya, is actually a type of cactus. Just look at the thing – probably the best and most dramatic looking fruits there is. A thing of beauty both inside and out!

Our thoughts: 

I had tried this before and I did like it. From what I remember it was similar to a kiwi, but a lot more mellow in flavour. But this particular one we had in Malaysia didn’t taste so good. It might’ve been off?

Mangosteen 

Known as the queen of fruits, the mangosteen is another must try in Malaysia. It has a hard purple outer rind with the inside flesh segmented and white in colour. The flesh is what you eat and it can be opened fairly easily with your hands. Often it is consumed after a durian session.

Our thoughts: 

This was very different in taste. I just couldn’t put my finger on it, but I know it was nothing like I’ve ever had. The wife strangely claimed it tasted like a McDonald’s fillet o fish… don’t ask.
