The Bubble Waffle is an iconic Hong Kong street food snack that has taken over the world. This place in London does it the best!
Bubblewrap: The Best Bubble Waffle in London

The quintessential Hong Kong street food staple that is the bubble waffle (or egg waffle) can be dated back to the 1950s when supposedly the economy was bleak and unsold eggs were used to come up this beautiful creation. Back then, each bubble would be sold individually as opposed to the full waffle that we get now. Now, it commonly comes as a cone that holds different toppings including ice cream, chocolate and fruit.

Bubblewrap, in Chinatown London, can claim to be the one that popularised it in London. It all started out as a university project and then before you know it, it became a viral sensation. One of the earliest and biggest viral sensations or the past decade or the social media era. Think of this as the original birria tacos or the Korean corn dog – in terms of its viral status. There wouldn’t be a day you’d go past this shop in Chinatown and not see a painstakingly long queue. In fact the first time we visited Chinatown years ago, we were very much put off by the loooong queue and as a result we didn’t even get it (even though this was number 1 on our list of things to try). This time round however, we were there early and so there was literally no one there. We couldn’t believe our fortune.

They have some classic flavour combos (they all look appealing). On our recent visit, we opted for the Chinese New Year special they currently had on offer, which was the HK Milk Tea Combo: it was made of the Original Bubblewrap Waffle, Hong Kong Milk Tea Gelato, Boba & Salted Creme Cheese. And it was as delicious as it was pretty! If you like bubble tea, then this is a must for you, you’ll love this! It was everything you’d want in a dessert. Fluffy and airy bubble waffles, ice cream with strong tea flavour, and the sweet and chewy tapioca pearls. It’s not overwhelmingly filling either as the waffle bubbles are light due to them being airy on the inside. Winner!! Go grab it ASAP as it will only be around for a limited period of time.
