This is an alley from the thousands of alleys in the markets of Marrakech – Jamaa al-Fnaa. If you’ve visited, you’ll know how difficult it is to navigate around these markets. As a result, it’s very difficult to find the real street food that Marrakech is known for. And most people return only having tried variations of tajines and couscous. This alley/street is an absolute must visit for all foodies. Here you’ll find 3 dishes that you just won’t find anywhere else in Morocco.
How can you locate it?
Look out for tanjia pots as explained in the post about Tanjia. As soon as you see these pots (picture 1), you know you’re in the area.
What to try there?
Well the street is full of family run restaurants that have been there for 5+ generations!! And they only have 3 items on their menu. 1. Tanjia (see post). 2. Roasted meat with cumin and salt to dip into. 3. Sheep head (yes – a head of a sheep). And no tajine in sight!
This area is full of history and culture. The tanjia as explained in another post is cooked in a communal oven which is used for hammams. The roasted meat is slow cooked in underground pits. And the sheep head – well it’s sheep head – it’ll steal any show. You probably stopped reading / vomited after reading it in the previous paragraph. If you haven’t, well done. The sheep head is not as commonly eaten as the other two. It’s reserved for special occasions. And every single part is eaten. Every. Single. Part. The eyeball being the most sought after.
How did each dish taste?
Now that’ll just be a spoiler. I dare you to go try it next time you’re there (if you can find it first).
