When in Rome… you have to try these 7 dishes. Some are Roman classics and some are modern twists on classics. Rome is a city full of history, culture, jaw dropping sites and great food. Some would argue it is one of the best food cities in Europe especially for Italian food lovers. And thankfully, there are some really good Halal options too.
1. Cacio Pepe
Even though Italian cuisine isn’t my favourite cuisine (I prefer spicy noodles over cheesy/tomato based), I really do appreciate and love how simple their food can be. Simple yet delicious. Showing that good quality ingredients can go a far way. Here we have Cacio Pepe – a dish made out of 4 ingredients only. FOUR!
The Cacio Pepe is a classic Rome dish that is a must try when in the Italian capital. A true Roman staple that has been around for centuries. Literally translates to “cheese and pepper” in Italian. It is famously super simple. All you need is 4 ingredients – spaghetti, pecorino cheese, black pepper and a few ladle-fulls of the boiling starchy water that was used to cook the pasta (genius touch).
Some even refer to it as the original mac and cheese.
2. Pizza al taglio
Pizza al taglio is a variety of pizza which was invented in Rome. It is a large, rectangular pizza loaded with toppings, cut with scissors into rectangular or square slices and sold by weight. This approach, as opposed to the normal round pizza, makes it easier for you to customise for both price and variety. You have to try this at Bonci’s of course…
Bonci’s Pizzarium is a place you absolutely HAVE to visit when in Rome. Actually, it, alone, is a great reason for you to visit Rome! Remember the name. Save it!

3. Italian Desserts
What’s your favourite Italian dessert?
Pictured we have the iconic Canolli, Maritozzi and the classic Tiramisu.
Canolli comes from Sicily, interestingly with Arab influence. Deep fried pastry case with cream filling. This one provides a crunchy texture along with the contrasting creaminess.
Maritozzi is Rome classic pastry. Not as well known as the other two, but extremely popular in Rome. It is basically a generous amount of cream in like a brioche style bun. Lucious, creamy and the perfect amount of sweetness. It’s commonly consumed for breakfast – and I LOVE that! I’m all for something sweet/desserty for breakfast. And you can just imagine how it perfectly goes with a strong cup of espresso.
Tiramisu is of course a classic. The origin of it is up for debate and there are numerous wonderful theories out there. Regardless, a delicious dessert. If you love coffee, chocolate and mascarpone (who doesn’t?)- this is you.
4. Coffee
How can you come to Rome and not try the coffee? One of the contenders for the best coffee in Rome is this retro polished Italian cafe, Sciascia Caffè, which has been serving coffee here since 1919! That’s one hundred and three years! Wow. A must visit in Rome.

5. Trapizzino
The modern but instant Roman street food classic. A pizza sandwich! Another must try in Rome.

6. Jewish/Roman artichoke
The Jewish Ghetto is a historical part of Rome that is definitely kind of a hidden jewel. Full of history and character. It feels like a different city all together! Back in 1555 all Jews were forced to stay in this area and were given no rights and were treated poorly. Only in 1870 were the Jews of Rome given the rights of Italians. What you’ll see now is an accumulation of a lot of history and culture. This dish is a classic and a must try here.

7. Gelato
I mean you have to try gelato when in Italy. How can you not? Whether you want to try your safe and classic flavours or want to be adventurous, you’ll find something. Lemon is particularly refreshing! Tiramisu flavoured gelato is interesting.
