Pasar Baru

Nestled amidst the bustling streets of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, lies Pasar Baru. This historic district, aptly named “New Market” in Bahasa Indonesia, has been a hidden gem for both shopping enthusiasts and cultural aficionados. Now, we will delve into the charm and allure of Pasar Baru, a place where tradition meets modernity.

A Rich Tapestry of History

Established in the late 19th century during the Dutch colonial era, Pasar Baru carries with it a rich tapestry of history. Its narrow lanes and colonial architecture transport visitors back in time, making it a captivating destination for history buffs. The area is dotted with heritage buildings, some of which have been repurposed into modern shops, while others have retained their historical charm. These buildings are a testament to the multicultural history of the city.

Shopping Paradise

Pasar Baru is renowned for its traditional market, which offers an array of products, from textiles and clothing to electronics and household goods. It’s a shopper’s paradise where you can haggle for the best deals. Textile enthusiasts will be in awe of the diverse selection of fabrics and clothing materials available here. The market is famous for its batik, a traditional Indonesian cloth with intricate designs. The market is a treasure trove for bargain hunters. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or everyday items, you’re bound to find something that catches your eye at a reasonable price.

Culinary Adventures

No visit to Pasar Baru is complete without indulging in some delicious street food. Explore the food stalls offering traditional Indonesian dishes, where the scents of sizzling satay and fragrant rendang will entice your taste buds.

Pasar Baru, with its blend of history, culture, and commerce, offers a truly unique experience in Jakarta. As you explore the narrow lanes and historic buildings, you’ll be immersed in a world where the past mingles with the present. Whether you’re hunting for great bargains, seeking to experience Indonesian street food, or simply wanting to soak in the local culture, Pasar Baru has something for everyone. It’s a hidden gem that beckons you to uncover its secrets and make your own memories in this charming and culturally rich enclave of Jakarta.

ITC Mangga Mall

And the last spot I am going to recommend is this 6 floor mall (which is opposite Mangga Dua Mall) that essentially specialises in “not so real” (if you know you know) goods ranging from clothing to shoes to watches and a whole lot more. I’ve been to similar malls in Beijing and Istanbul (more of a street) and I can confirm that the prices quoted here are actually decent. A disclaimer: do check the legal status of purchasing such goods and taking them to your home country.
