Bury Park in Luton is known for its vibrant shopping options and residents. Walking or driving through this part of Luton will make you wonder whether you’re still in England or not. This vibrancy and multiculturalism is wonderful. However, locals will tell you that the food scene is somewhat lacking. There are numerous chicken and chip shops including many that have been there for decades, but the quality isn’t great nor is the variety. It is changing slowly and one example of that is newly opened Karwan. They opened up in a space where many many others have attempted and failed miserably. There’s been buffalo wing spots, Indian spots, Pakistani/Arab spots in the past who have tried, but failed to attract much custom. Walking past would showcase a grim fortune. So, when Karwan decided to open up shop a few months back, you can’t blame the people to be a bit apprehensive. Is this another one that will disappear in a few months? Thankfully, a few months in and they are going very strong. Everytime you walk past it’s super busy almost like there’s a wedding going on or something. And long may it continue. Read on to discover our experience of the place and food.
The food
The menu has a wide variety of options including some Afghan classics. We tried the Kabuli Pilao and the Chapli Kebab, two Afghani staples. Along with a few other bits and bobs. The presentation of the food as you can see is top tier. Very nicely presented and appealing to the eyes. But it’s all in the taste. The Kabuli Pilao, I absolutely loved. It comes with a lamb shank and the tenderness of it complimented the rice so well. I’m usually not a fan of carrot or raisins in my rice, but I actually liked this one. This comes with a chickpea curry too, which adds a nice saucy addition for those who want it and it’s good because it doesn’t overpower the taste of the main dish. The Chapli Kebab are famous Afghan kebabs that are flat and deep-fried. It comes with an infamous long Afghan bread. This was okay, but in reality I’ve had much better elsewhere. We also tried the mix grill, which includes lamb chopan, lamb kofta, chicken shish and chicken kofta. At the end of every meal, you get a free pot of Afghan green tea with jaggery. This is so good and such a nice way to end a meal.
The service
The staff are amazing. From the minute you enter the restaurant they are all smiles. They greet you, take your order, deliver your order and serve you free tea all with a big smile on their face. It is evident they are taking customer service seriously and in reality so should all businesses. It has a great impact on the overall impression of the restaurant. Who knows, maybe this is a big reason there are so many returning customers here.
The setting
They have the normal chair and tables, but what I found more impressive is the traditional on the floor seating. Staying true to Afghan traditions. I love this seating personally, it’s something different and I feel it adds greatly to the overall dining experience.
