Trying veal doner from @houseofdoneruk
House of Doner is a famous Doner shop from Germany. For anyone unaware, the Germans know how to do Doner. They’ve arrived in London and they have two branches. I visited the Farringdon branch which is very conveniently located right next to the station. I love how the shop looked aesthetically and judging by how busy it was (on a random Thursday afternoon) evidently it is very popular and usually this means the food is going to be good! I wanted to see how this tastes in comparison to other style doner and also I wanted to try out their very unique veal doner!
German Doner
Some may not be aware, but the Germans know how to do doner. Doner is huge in Germany and is most likely due to the Turkish immigrants. The highest number of Turkish immigrants in Europe is in Germany. They have become a part of the country. It seems like kind of like the Indian or Chinese population in the UK and their influence on the country’s food. Some even argue the best doner you can get in the world is not Turkey or the Middle East, but in Germany!
Their menu
They do veal and chicken doner. And you can get this in a box with chips or rice and salad. You can get the traditional German doner sandwich. But we went for the most popular item on their menu and that is the wrap. And to be honest, this is my favourite way too. I feel the with a wrap you’re able to taste more of the meat and its quality shines through.
What I tried
I got a mixed wrap. So it came with veal and chicken doner. Salad and sauces. You can choose from a variety including chilli, garlic and herbs. We wanted garlic but it was sold out (showing how popular they are!).
How did it taste?
The wrap overall was fantastic. The doner both tasted superb – not gamey at all, but succulent and juicy. The salad and sauces complimented it perfectly as it elevated the flavour and it made for some really satisfying bites. And you know how usually Doner can be too filling or fatty/greasy feeling on the stomach. This did not have that at all. I was able to eat it with ease despite having lunch prior to this visit. And there were no aftereffects neither. Felt good and light after it. The veal itself tasted like a more leaner cleaner version of lamb doner.
