When you think of bubble tea, you don’t think healthy do you? Well, with Cupp, you should! Guilt free bubble tea drinking! We’ll get to that later on. The story of Cupp goes back to 2009 and to the birth place of bubble tea, Taiwan! While the founders were living there they fell in love with the culture, food, people and most importantly the national drink: the bubble tea! So, when they returned to England, they wanted to bring back some of their Taiwanese memories with them and what better way than via the bubble tea! They perfected their bubble tea making skills at an independent shop in Kaohsiung, to really hone in on authenticity – love it! Then, Cupp was born in the city of Bristol. And before you knew it, they now have numerous branches around the country including many in London, in Leeds, Manchester, Bradford and Wales! Their growth is an evidence of their quality and success. Read more about their story here.
Healthy bubble tea
What makes Cupp unique is the fact they claim their bubble tea is healthy! Bubble tea (or boba) dates back to the 1980s and is traditionally a drink that is composed of milk, tea and tapioca pearls. Now, it is a more encompassing term that includes numerous fruit and milk variations. Also, popping bubbles replacing chewy tapioca pearls. Traditionally, it isn’t known to be healthy and therefore despite its addictive deliciousness one cannot consciously consume too much of it. But Cupp are claiming theirs is healthy!? Whaaaat! How? They use quality loose leaf tea, they make their own fresh fruit puree and fresh milk or soya goes into their milk bubble teas. No sugary powders or non dairy creamer is used. Sugar content is kept low (unless you want more) and some of their drink have added benefits such as the matcha one. Toppings such as basil seed has benefits too and tapioca pearls are low calories too. So, drink away and don’t feel guilty about it!!
Our experience
We tried:
Brown sugar milk tea
Peach fruit tea
Rose milk tea
Wintermelon milk tea
We loved all of their drinks to be honest especially the milk tea ones. We have tried it at a few branches now and they consistently taste good. You can certainly tell they taste “healthier”. It doesn’t taste as sweet as others, but the taste is not compromised. Very impressive how they achieved that. My wife reckons this is her favourite bubble tea spot after Xing Fu Tang of course.
