If you’re staying in Sousse and planning a trip to this charming village, there are a few ways to get there, each offering its own unique experience. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best travel option for your journey.
1. By Train
Travelling by train is one of the most traditional and local ways to reach Sidi Bou Said from Sousse. The train ride costs around £4, making it an affordable option. However, it’s important to note that this route is not direct. You will need to change trains at a midpoint, and there are only four trains per day that stop at this mid point.
If the train schedules do not align with your timing, this option can become long and inconvenient. Despite this, it’s a great way to experience the local way of travelling and enjoy the scenic views along the way. We’ve read some not so good reviews online regarding the service, so if you choose this option, do keep an open mind.
2. By Taxi
Taking a taxi or using a ride-hailing service like Bolt is a more convenient and faster option. The cost for a taxi ride from Sousse to Sidi Bou Said ranges between £30 to £40 for the entire taxi. This option allows for a more comfortable and direct journey compared to the train.
An even cheaper alternative is using the mini buses, or “louages”, which are common in Tunisia. These shared taxis operate on fixed routes and can be a cost-effective way to travel. However, they may not offer the same level of comfort and privacy as a taxi.
3. By Private Driver
Hiring a private driver can be the most convenient and flexible way to travel, albeit at a higher cost. We organised a private driver through our hotel, costing £50 per person. This option included visits to Carthage, Tunis, and Sidi Bou Said, making it a full-day excursion from around 10 am to 7 pm.
Our driver was extremely nice and respectful, ensuring we had ample time to explore each destination. This service comes highly recommended, especially if you’re looking to see multiple attractions in one day.
